Goal

This Site is for essays on The New Pulp Heroes. It’s about time we catalog new characters appearing in books and anthologies. Since I do not have time to read everything being published, I will offer space here for legitimate creators of new pulp characters to send me their data, and I will post their essays. It is not my place to say what is, or what is not a new pulp hero, and the only changes I will make to essays will be editing and format. If you wish, include a jpeg of a book cover or b&w illustration if you have permission from the artist. By sending me your essays, you are giving me permission to promote and showcase this data. Essays should be up to 500 words, and include information on MC and back up characters, creator, title of books, and where the stories can be found. A paperback edition is now available for $12.00, plus $3.99 postage (US). The book will only be sold through us: Tom Johnson, 204 W. Custer St., Seymour, TX 76380. Send questions or data to fadingshadows40@gmail.com

THE BOOK CAVE FINAL EPISODE

THE BOOK CAVE FINAL EPISODE

The Book Cave #300 airs this week, and Ric shuts the door on this popular podcast – for now. It had a long run, and introduced many new pulp writers and their fiction to anxious listeners. Ric Croxton and Art SIppo were instrumental in many firsts in pulp fandom. Their enthusiastic reviews and interviews helped promote not only the new writers and New Pulp, but also promoted the original pulp magazines and their characters and authors. In 2010 & 2011 they were the recipients of the ECHOES Award. They never had a bad word to say about anyone or their books, and can be proud of their many, and truly monumental accomplishments. Visit The Book Cave at http://thebookcave.libsyn.com/webpage The archives will remain up for a period, but may eventually be dropped. Art Sippo will continue occasionally with his own podcast, Art’s Reviews http://artsreviews.libsyn.com/webpage  We want to wish Ric and Art the best in all their future endeavors, and hope that all of you will drop them a note of thanks. God Bless.

Doc Savage Digest

Doc Savage Digest: “The Sasquatch Terror” by Tom Johnson. In August, 1944, a young Canadian woman comes to New York to enlist the help of Doc and his crew in finding her missing father. It seems a legendary Sasquatch is terrorizing the Canadian woods, and it was seen in the area where her father mysteriously disappeared. Doc, Monk and Ham fly into Canada to discover a mystery plot, and high adventure.

This was originally written when rumors circulated that Moonstone might be publishing an anthology of Doc Savage short stories. But that was only a rumor, and it never came about. With no chance of the story ever being published, it remained strictly fan fiction. The late David Burton and I talked about the story, and what fun it would be to have a new magazine in the pulp tradition featuring Doc Savage. Our Fading Shadows magazines were publishing new pulp stories since 1995, and there are numerous Doc pastiches around – even a few fan fiction novels featuring the Bronze Man. David worked up a mock cover for a fictitious new magazine, which would feature Doc Savage in new short stories. It was a lot of fun, but had no real possibilities of ever being a reality. I thought it would be nice to at least share David’s proposed cover for the fans.

Soichiro Tachikawa
Freddie Barnes

Judy Cooper ran away from Odessa, Texas at 14 because of her stepfather. Ending up in New York she finds employment at the Second Avenue Gym, cleaning the building. It’s here that she learns to box. Falling in love with a mobster named Fiorello, she lives with him until he’s murdered by his Mafia pals. Becoming The Black Stiletto, she goes after his killers. Now she doesn’t want to quit, and fights crime in the city as a masked vigilante.  She’s twenty, a tall woman in black costume; a mask covered the top half of her head and face. Dark eyes sparkled through holes in the black leather; a sweet smile, mouth covered in lipstick. A knife sheath is strapped to her thigh, a stiletto blade inside. Her costume is black leather jacket and belt, tight leather pants, knee-high boots, small backpack and half hood-mask. Behind the costume, she has a bubbly personality, and maybe falls in love too easily.
Freddie Barnes runs the Second Avenue Gym, and has become her second father, taking care of her, and giving her a place to live on the premises. She keeps the gym clean, and eventually becomes a trainer.
Soichiro Tachikawa is her third father, teaching her karate and judo.  His wife was killed at Hiroshima. He has a daughter named Isuzu. She is kidnapped and hooked on Heroin by a black gangster. After The Black Stiletto rescues her, the drug lord killed Soichiro in the second novel.
Lucy is a waitress at the East Side CafĂ©, and a fried of Judy’s.
Martin Talbot is the son of Judy Talbot, nee Cooper. Divorced, with a teenage daughter, he’s 49, and his mother is 73, suffering Alzheimer’s in a nursing home. Martin was not aware of his mother’s crime fighting in the 1950s as The Black Stiletto until he discovers a hidden room behind a closet, where he found the costume of The Black Stiletto, and her diary telling of her exploits. She had been famous, though wanted by the police and FBI as a vigilante. Now Martin was make sure her past remains a secret.

The Black Stiletto was a costumed vigilante who operated in New York from 1958 to 1963, fighting petty criminals, the Mafia, communist spies, as well as drug lords. Fast-forward to the current time, and 73 year old Judy Talbot, nee Cooper, is in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her son, Martin was not aware of her past until discovering a secret closet in their old home, and finding The Black Stiletto’s black costume and mask, along with her diary telling about her deeds as the masked vigilante. A secret he must keep without fail.
